WE LOVE MV: El Gato Grande Food Truck – A Big Deal
You will be able to find El Gato Grande at The Cove in Vineyard Haven. What’s The Cove? It’s the Island’s mini-golf course. With new owners, this place is really going through fun changes, and that’s another blog coming soon.
However, in the meantime, let’s talk tacos. Chef Spring Sheldon is the mastermind behind El Grande Gato. Why a food truck? Well, she doesn’t want to be in a restaurant and doesn’t want to be cooking privately only. A food truck is a balance.
Why tacos you might ask? Spring fell in love with Mexico and its taquerias. The taco is so personalized – everyone has their preferences from proteins to how spicy to the shell. With El Gato Grande, Spring is marrying authentic Mexican flavors with a little taste of New England.
WE LOVE MV: El Gato Grande Food Truck – Taco Time El Gato Style
Spring hosted a small gathering of taco enthusiasts and friends to do a truck launch event. The truck itself is so eye catching and piques your curiosity. Once you get closer, the smell is simply seductive.
There were a number of options for guests to sample. If you know Spring, you know the ingredients are going to be incredible along with the flavor combinations.
There were Beef Barbosa, Fried Local Fluke, MVM Shiitake Mushroom, Cottage City Fried Oysters, and Al Pastor (pork) tacos. Sides were available too including Esquites (street corn, Chipotle Black Beans, Bontas (chips), Cold Watermelon and more! So much to choose from!
My husband and I ordered one of each taco just to make sure to do as thorough a tasting research job on El Gato Grande tacos as possible. Plus they all sounded so good, and they all were good.
I definitely had my top 3. I loved the Cottage City Fried Oysters taco with aguachile, Garden Farm iceberg and pickled jalapeños (in the middle). Boy do I love fried oysters and adding them to a new delicious taco is a big win!
Also, the local Fried Fluke with chipotle mayo slaw was really tasty (on the right). Fish tacos are always a crowd pleaser! I think my other top favorite was the Beef Barbosa with pico de gallo and pickled onion (on the left). Oh and the street corn was really good. The fresh cilantro really helped make all the flavors pop.
As expected, everything tasted so fresh, was bursting with colors and tasted incredible. Also, it was great to run into so many foodie friends including Nevette Previd (Farm.Field.Sea) and Susie Middleton (Vineyard Gazette). Thank you Spring for bringing us El Gato Grande. Oh, and you can experience this gem for yourself if you like, they cater!
El Gato- Grande is just one of several new places to enjoy great food on the island. Whatever you do, we hope that you have a wonderful time. Summer is in full swing!
