Shirley W. Mayhew, a longtime West Tisbury resident, writer, teacher, naturalist and traveler, died Thursday at her home in West Tisbury. She was 94.
Ms. Mayhew had been a frequent contributor to the Gazette in recent years, with personal essays drawn from her prolific writings over the decades. They covered a wide range, from her travels abroad in her younger years to her singular life spent near Look’s Pond in West Tisbury with her late husband John Mayhew and family.
Her first book was Seasons of a Vineyard Pond, followed by five others. Her most recent essay was published in the Gazette online on August 11.
Arrangements are incomplete; a full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Gazette.
