The Barnstable County Sheriff’s office released a statement saying two employees but no inmates have been stricken with coronavirus during the pandemic.
Special Sheriff Jeffrey Perry said the numbers show that claims by prisoner rights groups that jails would become a “petri dish” for COVID-19 were unfounded.
In total, county sheriffs across the state reported 284 cases of COVID-19 among inmates, none of which are currently active, Perry said.
Among the 155 cases across the state among staff, five are currently active, Perry said.
He said there have been two deaths.
The state Department of Public Health reported six new cases in Barnstable County on Thursday for a total of 1,728 cases. There were no new deaths reported in the county, which has a total of 174. In the state there were 455 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 for a total of 126,863. The department reported 15 new deaths in the state for a total of 9,150.
