BUZZARDS BAY — A middle-aged man was rescued after he was found floating on his back, drifting toward Buzzards Bay, near the Cohasset Narrows Bridge, according to Bourne police and fire officials.
Wareham and Bourne safety officials were notified at 1:22 p.m. Tuesday of people in the water near the Cohasset Narrows Bridge, Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Carrara said. The report was later changed to one person.
The man was apparently intoxicated, according to Bourne Police Chief Dennis Woodside. He was in a vehicle with his sister when she stopped on the bridge that connects Buzzards Bay to Wareham, Woodside said.
It is unclear whether the man jumped or fell off the bridge, Carrara said.
Woodside, who was in the area at the time, said he saw the man “floating on his back drifting with the current towards Buzzards Bay.”
Fire boat crews were nearby practicing a hazmat drill in Onset Harbor, Carrara said, and the Wareham harbormaster was called first to the scene, followed by Bourne.
The Wareham harbormaster pulled the man out of the water on the Bourne side of the channel and brought him to Taylor’s Point Marina, Carrara said.
The man was conscious and alert, Carrara said. He was taken to Tobey Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, he said.
