The Cape and Islands league winter sports all-star rosters are full of purple and white this year as 14 Vineyard student-athletes across four different teams earned all-star recognition.

On the boys basketball team, Rammon Dos Santos, Mike Trusty and Aiden Rogers were chosen as all-stars and Nico DePaula received honorable mention. The boys basketball team won the league title this year after going on the road to defeat top-seeded Sandwich in the semifinals then Falmouth in the championship.

Dos Santos, a senior, was the team’s defensive anchor and a rebounding machine. Trusty, also a senior and captain of the team, was the Vineyard’s swiss army knife as he played anywhere from point guard to power forward.

Rogers, a senior, is a long-range shooter who hit three three-pointers in a row to open the semifinals against Sandwich. DePaula, a senior, was instrumental in the Vineyard’s fourth-quarter run to beat Falmouth in the championship.

In girls basketball, Kylie Estrella, a senior and team captain, received an honorable mention for her play this season. Estrella finished the season as the Vineyard’s top-scorer.

On the boys hockey team, Hunter Meader, Elias Gundersen, Aiden Marek, Cam Geary and Oliver Lively all earned all-star nods, Liam Marek received an honorable mention, and Charlie Lakis received a sportsmanship award. The boys finished the regular season tied with Nantucket for the number-one seed in the league but could not participate in the playoffs due to a positive coronavirus test.

Meader, a senior, was one of the team-leaders in goals and assists. Gundersen, a senior and team captain, was a steady presence on the blue line for the Vineyarders as he routinely foiled opposing players’ breakaways and offensive attacks. Aiden Marek, a senior and team captain, was quick with his stick around the net as he consistently turned rebounds into goals for the Vineyard.

Geary, a junior and assistant team captain, had his season cut short due to an injury but still made an all-star impression on defense. Lively, a junior goaltender, had two shut-outs this season as he made his return to wearing a purple and white sweater after playing off Island during the first two years of his high school career. Liam Marek, a sophomore and Aiden’s younger brother, is quick on the attack and surgical with his passes. He was also one of the Vineyard leaders in points and assists.

For the girls hockey team, Ruby Reimann and Paige Anderson were chosen as all-stars and Marin Gillis received an honorable mention. After finishing the season with three ties but no wins, the girls lost in the semi-finals of the Cape and Islands league tournament to Barnstable.

Reimann, a senior and team captain, battled through an injury as the season wound down. She showed toughness on defense and utilized precision poke checks to break up opposing offensive opportunities. Anderson, a sophomore, was one of the Vineyard’s top goal-scorers. Gillis, a freshman, was also a top goal-scorer for the Vineyard. In one of the final games of the season, Gillis scored two unanswered final-period goals against the Cape Cod Furies.

Swim team all-stars have not been announced yet.
