Tucked away off Sengekontacket Pond on Martha’s Vineyard, you will find the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. This Mass Audubon property has 194 acres in preservation and includes woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marshes, acres of shoreline on Sengekontacket, four miles of trails, and much more. It is bountiful with natural beauty and things to do, making it a perfect addition to our Vineyard Bucket List video series – Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List: Exploring Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.

Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List: Exploring Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary – Birding

Felix Neck hosts a variety of birds year round. As you drive to the sanctuary, you are greeted by a large osprey nests and it is an active nest in season. At the visitor’s center, you will see lots of different types of birds flying about.

Felix Neck offers birding programs to participate or you can go birding on your own. Additional birds you may see include American Goldfinches, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Song Sparrows, and so many more. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary provides not only spectacular trails and landscapes, but it also has the most knowledgeable staff members. They offer adult (and family) group guided tours. You can take these by foot or by kayak. The shorelines of Felix Neck offer nature fans the chance to see the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard from a different perspective.

You can choose your type of tour — they offer tours that specialize in the nature of Martha’s Vineyard, birds, botany or just about any natural history topic of your choosing. By going by kayak, you get to explore the shoreline of Felix Neck and see the shorebirds forage for food in the salt marshes and even have the chance to get a closer look at Sarson’s island (also referred to as bird island) in the center of the pond.

Felix Neck has four miles of trails for you to explore. Depending on the path you choose, you can cross a bridge to discover Turtle Pond, search for the sea creatures that inhabit the shorelines of Sengekontacket, visit a labyrinth and more.

Through meadows and woodlands and across shoreline, Felix Neck is a magical place to explore and the trails are easy to navigate and are family friendly. You can even play Nature Bingo or go on a quest, click here for more nature inspired fun.
