The girls tennis team had their Saturday match against Nantucket postponed due to weather, however, rain is about the only thing stopping the girls from winning as they cruised to their seventh and eighth wins of the season last week.
On Wednesday at home, the girls also swept Falmouth 5-0 as all the Vineyard singles players, Hunter Tomkins (first), Cali Giglio (second) and Karinne Nivala (third) won their matches 6-0, 6-0. On Friday, against Nauset on the Cape, the Vineyard girls again swept the singles matches as they beat the Warriors 4-1.
Head coach Bill Rigali said this season has been a nice surprise following a year off because of the pandemic.
“The girls have handled everything well, they’re practicing hard and competing well in the matches. The fact that they’re a young team adds to my surprise because we didn’t know how they would take to the experience of playing varsity points. Kudos to the girls, they’ve done an excellent job.”
The boys tennis team is also undefeated at 7-0, although the Nauset Warriors pushed them to the limit on Thursday. After sweeping the Warriors 5-0 at home earlier in the season, Coach Lewis said Nauset played like a team with something to prove last week.
Max Potter, the Vineyard’s first singles player, won his matchup 6-0, 6-0. Then Nauset’s Rufus McCleary handed the Vineyard’s second singles player, Eric Reubens, his first defeat of the season 6-3, 6-4. In third singles, the Vineyard’s Jacob Riis was victorious in his match 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, the Vineyard’s first pair of Clyde Smith and Teagen Myers secured the win for purple and white winning their match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. And in second doubles, Ben Belisle and Jack Marshard fell 6-4, 6-3 to close out the day.
Earlier in the week, the Vineyarders swept Falmouth 5-0. Their match against Nantucket Saturday was postponed to June 14 due to weather.
The softball team had an exciting start to their holiday weekend as Ashley Brasefield hit a two-run, go-ahead double to lead purple and white to a 26-24 victory over St. John Paul II on Friday. Brasefield’s double was one of multiple hits she had on the day along with teammates Bethany Cardoza, Kayleigh Bollin and Clara Cabral. Cardoza was especially hot at the plate going 4-5 with a home run, two doubles and a single.
For the baseball team, the boys started the week with an 11-5 road loss to Falmouth on ednesday and came up just short against Nauset 4-3 at home on Thursday. The boys were down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh and rallied to tie it but the Warriors responded with a run in the eighth to win it. Leo Neville pitched seven innings and struck out six for the Vineyard. Nico Arroyo was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and Ben Mulvey hit a pinch-hit double that knocked in a run for purple and white.
In lacrosse, the boys team eked out a 9-8 victory against Falmouth Tuesday at home to snap a three-game losing skid. Hunter Meader scored four goals for the Vineyard as netminder Graham Stearns made 27 saves, 19 in the first half, in the victory. The boys were down two goals in the third quarter but rallied to score four unanswered and held the Clippers to just one goal in the final quarter to secure the win. Eli Gunderson scored twice as Ed Cherry, Aiden Marek and Josh Brown also scored for the Vineyard.
The girls lacrosse team fell in both their games this week, first to St. John Paul II 17-6 at home on Monday and then 8-3 away against Falmouth on Tuesday. Against SJPII, Alana Nevin and Ali Dyke each scored twice as Caroline Kelleher and Isabelle Murphy also netted points to round out the Vineyard’s scoring. In Falmouth on Tuesday, Isabelle Ribeiro, along with Kelleher and Dyke, each scored a goal for the Vineyard.
Also on Tuesday, the track team was in South Yarmouth to take on Dennis-Yarmouth. The Dolphins topped both the Vineyard boys and girls 65-56 and 70-66. Annabelle Biggs won three events for the Vineyard: the long jump, the 100-meter and the 200-meter. Wren and Eloise Christy were also winners for purple and white with Elosie winning the 400-meter hurdles, the high jump and the 400-meter. Her twin sister Wren won the 1 and 2 mile races.
The sailing team did not get to compete in the Figawi fleet racing event at the Hyannis Yacht Club Saturday due to the weather but they did sweep their opponents in last week’s action. On Monday they beat both Bishop Stang and Dartmouth 3-0 and 3-2 before downing Falmouth 3-0 on Thursday. Sailing head coach Andrew Burr said they are hoping to make up Saturday’s race on Friday.
Recently, two Vineyard soccer players, keeper Ruby Reimann and forward Kaya Seiman, signed letters of intent to play soccer at the college level. Reimann was a force to be reckoned with in net for the Vineyard from the time she was a freshman. Seimen’s lightning-quick speed routinely torched opposing defenders as she was one of the Vineyard’s leading scorers this year. Reimann will play at Bates College in Lewiston, Me. and Seiman will play at Simmons University in Boston.
