Most people think of Martha’s Vineyard for a Summer getaway – beautiful beaches, endless outdoor activities, great dining and more. However, the Winter months offer a quiet beauty that can be just as enjoyable.

Winter looks much different now than it did when I first moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 2003. There are a lot more people on the Island, and there are many more ways to enjoy not only this time of year but year round.

1.) Off-Season Beach Walks

The Island tends to be warmer than the Boston area because it takes a wile for the water to cool. It acts as a sort of insulator. We also tend to get less precipitation than other spots in New England (though we love to get snow here because the Island looks beautiful in a blanket of white). It is the perfect time to enjoy Island beaches. Off -Season beach walks can offer the most amazing sunrises and sunsets and cloud formations. There is something about the crisp, cool skies that deliver memorable beach vistas. Beach walks are a year-round tradition here.

2.) The Martha’s Vineyard Museum

Open year-round, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum offers visitors a look at the Island’s rich history. With a number of permanent exhibits and exhibits on rotation, there is always something new to discover. Afterwards, head to town for lunch at The Black Dog Tavern or Waterside Market. Click here to learn more about the MVM.

3.) Trails MV – Re-discover the Natural Beauty of the Island

There is an app, Trails MV, that offers the user insight to all the trails of the Island. There are walks/hikes for all levels. One of our favorite hikes is The Brickyard in Chilmark – roughly four miles. the view of the historic brickyard and surrounding waters is so beautiful. You may be surprised at all the available hikes and trails found on the Island, and how beautiful the properties are year-round. Click here to learn more about Trails MV.

4.) Island Alpaca

No matter the time of year, it is so fun to see all the alpaca at Island Alpaca. You can even sign up to walk one. Talk about a fun afternoon adventure! I had the best time getting unclose to the alpaca. When you’re done, warm up in the gift shop for some unique alpaca made treasures. Click here to learn more.

5.) Shopping

Though many places have shuttered for the season, many stores in Vineyard Haven are still open for business. Stop by Rainy Day for a fun find or two, head to the Green Room for unique clothing, or to Bunch of Grapes for the newest books by Island authors. Don’t forget to grab a coffee or tea from Mocha Motts or Nat’s Nook when you’re done!

6.) Dining Out

Yes, many restaurants are closed, but there are a number that remain open. Visit Offshore Ale for one of their craft beers or head to Town MV for Andy’s sushi or to Salvatore’s for a neighborhood Italian spot feel. There are several dining options available. We are happy to help you find a place to enjoy dining out on the Vineyard during the off-season.

7.) Lighthouses

If you are a fan of lighthouses, this is the place for you – 365 days a year. Though you can only access the inside of a number of them during the Summer, you can enjoy the outside of these iconic Island structures – definitely great for photos! From Gay Head, the East Chop, to Edgartown Light, each offers its own distinct style for you to enjoy. To lean more about the lighthouses, click here.

8.) The Carnegie

Have you been to the Carnegie? Open year-round, but only on the weekends this time of year, is the The Carnegie. Owned and operated by the Vineyard Trust, here you will discover incredible artifacts from the Island’s history and learn about the different properties the Vineyard Trust stewards. 9.) Enjoy Time Together

This is a great time to spend quality time together with friends or family. Hunker down for an intense round of Gin Rummy or perhaps enjoy a game or two of Vineyard-opoly. Enjoy walks together, visit new places, and enjoy the slower pace of the Island. This is the time to reconnect and enjoy each other.

10.) Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary

Enjoy a visit to Mass Audubon’s Felix Neck. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is 194 acres and focuses on protecting the habitats and wildlife of the Island. It also offers spectacular views for which Martha’s Vineyard is renowned. There are four miles of trails through woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marsh, and along shorelines allow for exploration and discovery. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop if it is open!
