Earth Day is Friday, and on the Vineyard a variety of activities are planned for throughout the weekend.
On Saturday the Vineyard Conservation Society will hold its annual beach clean-up at 27 beaches Islandwide from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Check the society’s website to find a favorite beach — or take the opportunity to explore someplace new. Bags and gloves will be available for people who don’t bring their own. Volunteers are invited to join an after-party that will be held at the Sailing Camp in Oak Bluffs at noon, with soup and treats donated by Island restaurants. The Vineyard Transit Authority will be offering free rides to anyone headed to a clean-up site.
Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is a listed site for the beach clean-up, but the sanctuary is also hosting its own a volunteer day. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and run until noon, with a barbecue to follow.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center welcomes all ages for kids’ games, music, seed planting, tours highlighting earth-friendly land and herd management and an earth appreciation ceremony.
For the recovery community, the Red House Peer Recovery Center is screening the film Fantastic Fungi and serving mushroom-based hors d’ouevres at 6 p.m. Saturday.
On Sunday, Felix Neck hosts another event: hike the streams, forest and coastline while learning about foraging with Kristina Hooks, an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal elder. The event begins at 11 a.m.
