An automobile accident near the drawbridge resulted in a van engulfed in flames Friday afternoon, Oak Bluffs deputy fire chief Stephen Foster told the Gazette by phone. Two vehicles were involved in the crash, but both drivers refused to be transported to the hospital, he said.
Mr. Foster said the Oak Bluffs fire department was dispatched to the Oak Bluffs side of the drawbridge at 3:38 p.m. for the two-car crash involving an SUV and a Ford Transit van. When Mr. Foster arrived, he met Oak Bluffs police on scene and said the van was fully engulfed in flames.
“It appeared to be a rear-end accident and [the van] appeared to be fully involved,” he said.
He said firefighters got to work extinguishing the van, knocking down the fire in less than 10 minutes. He said the department used just under 1,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
Mr. Foster said the two drivers exited their cars following the collision, and called for help after the van caught fire.
“They heard a pop and noticed the transit van had caught on fire,” Mr. Foster said.
He added that the state department of transportation was notified of the crash, and debris left from the blaze.
