In appreciation of the Island’s pet-loving community, the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard holds its annual Celebration of Pets at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Among the moments of appreciation, Island dog trainer Jeremy Jones will award good citizenship prizes to attendees, and Rev. Cathlin Baker, minister of the First Congressional Church of West Tisbury, will be in attendance to bless the animals — both domestic and farm.
The family-friendly event includes activities for people and their animals, large and small. Island celebrity Tony (the Pony) Smalls will make an appearance and create a live painting for attendees, and Karen Ogden of Positive Rewards Dog Training will conduct a sniffer dog demonstration. Ms. Ogden will showcase the skills of advanced search and rescue dogs before giving novice dogs in attendance the opportunity to exercise the instinct for themselves.
“I think this will be the most fun of all,” said Lisa Dawley, the animal shelter’s manager. “Karen is fantastic. She will hide scents in different lock boxes, and the dogs will try to locate them.”
The entertainment does not stop with the community’s four-legged companions. The celebration also promises activities geared toward children, including face painting and games.
“This is us giving back to our community,” Ms. Dawley said. “It’s the shelter thanking the community and showing them our appreciation.”
