Plans for a new preschool building at the Vineyard Montessori School will come before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission early next month.
The footprint is 2,915 square feet, but with two floors of classrooms the structure will have 5,500 square feet of interior space, which triggered its referral to the commission as a place of public assembly larger than 3,500 square feet.
Founded in 1975, the school currently serves 60 preschoolers, 18 toddlers and 15 elementary school students in two buildings on its campus at 286 Main street and 45 Tashmoo avenue in Vineyard Haven, according to commission documents.
Another 15 elementary and middle school students are attending classes in rented space on Church street.
The new building would allow the school to end that lease and consolidate all of its student body on campus, adding up to 29 more children for a total of 27 toddlers, 80 preschoolers and 30 students in elementary and middle school grades.
The existing Main Street building, which currently serves 60 preschoolers, will be renovated to add employee housing, head of school Deborah Jernegan told the commission’s land use planning committee Monday.
The MVC is scheduled to open a public hearing on the application Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
