The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ swim team won their second consecutive Cape and Islands League championship on Saturday.

“They were all really excited,” head swim coach Jennifer Passafiume said. “They swam so well on Saturday. Both the boys and the girls continued to drop more time and everybody was swimming personal best times.”

With a final score of 379, the boys’ team beat second place Nantucket by over 100 points.

“The boys were super fired up knowing we had a really good chance to win,” Ms. Passafiume said.

Senior captain Kaua De Assis broke two school records at the meet, swimming the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.50 and breaking his own record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.95. Ronan Mullin qualified for states in the 200-yard individual medley.

The boys 200-yard medley relay team consisting of De Assis, Mullin, Grady Stalgren, Michael Calheta qualified for sectionals by .04 seconds.

“Because that was the first event of the day, it kind of set us off into an excitement mode,” Ms. Passafiume said.

A highlight for her was Mullin’s individual medley race.

“I was watching him swim so I wasn’t looking at the clock and he was going really fast but I didn’t know how fast he was going,” she said. “Then I turned around and looked up at the board and we all screamed and cheered.”

Ms. Passafiume is proud of all the swimmers for their hard work this season.

“Every swimmer hit personal best times, especially in these last few weeks of meets we’ve had,” she said. “For me, the biggest highlight is watching them grow and achieve new personal bests and develop into the competition swimmers they became.”

The South Sectional Championship meet is this weekend at MIT.
