SOUTH YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – January 7, 2026 – As previously report, a quiet Sunday evening erupted into violence last Sunday – January 4, 2026 – when a 61-year-old woman allegedly stabbed a man in the neck during a heated argument over dinner preparations at a residence on Wampanoag Road.

According to a Yarmouth Police Department report filed by Detective Jeffrey Rivett, the suspect, Stefanie Melcher of South Yarmouth, has been charged with felony Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (knife). The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. at 26 Wampanoag Road, where the victim—a man who occasionally stayed at the home—was cooking ribs for himself and two women, including Melcher. All parties had been drinking when an argument escalated.
A witness inside the residence reported that Melcher confronted the victim, threw the ribs onto the floor, and got in his face. During the ensuing struggle as the victim tried to restrain her, Melcher allegedly stabbed him in the neck with a small pocketknife, causing blood to spurt everywhere, including onto the witness. The witness described Melcher as a “knife girl,” known for carrying a concealable two-inch blade. Although the witness did not see the knife being plunged into the victim’s neck—possibly due to the knife’s small size fitting in Melcher’s palm—investigators recovered a checkered-handled, spring-assisted knife at the scene, which was collected as evidence. Melcher’s bloodstained shirt and jeans were also seized at police headquarters.
Bleeding profusely from a potentially life-threatening neck injury, the victim fled to a neighbor’s home, where authorities were called. Yarmouth police responded swiftly amid snow- and ice-packed road conditions, securing the area and arresting Melcher after ordering her and the witness to exit the property. The witness was taken for questioning, while Melcher was detained.
The victim was immediately transported 3.5 miles to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of significant blood loss and an injury to a vital area. The injured rib chef reportedly wasn’t very cooperative with hospital staff who were trying to patch him up. In a surprising turn, upon release from the hospital, he was arrested on an unrelated active warrant, details of which remain undisclosed. Both the victim and Melcher were in police custody just hours following the incident at Wampanoag Road.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the scene, documenting evidence with assistance from the sheriff’s crime scene unit. Sources indicate a lack of cooperation from those involved, and the incident is not believed to be domestic in nature.
NOTE: HN recently reached out to the Yarmouth Police Department’s records division requesting additional details. HN was provided with the above booking photo of Melcher and told that the department is working on a statement that may be released later today—since this caper could have easily turned into a homicide investigation in HN’s point of view. HN Reminder: The details in this report are based on police reports, court documents, and statements from sources. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Roof Collapses at Hyannis Margaritaville Resort; Cause Under Investigation

HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – January 7, 2026 – Hyannis firefighters responded to an alarm at the Margaritaville Resort on Route 132 shortly after 10:00 p.m. last evening, locating a water leak and a roof collapse in Building 3.
Investigators are determining whether the collapse was due to the weight of accumulated slush and ice on the roof, water damage from the sprinklers, or if the collapse itself damaged the sprinkler system, exacerbating the flooding. Roof drainage issues were also mentioned in radio transmissions as a potential factor.
No injuries were reported, but guests in Building 3 were evacuated and relocated. A building inspector was called to evaluate the damage. At the time the above photo was taken, the Hyannis Fire Department was still on scene investigating the cause. [DEVELOPING]
