Oak Bluffs police have charged a 16-year-old male from Connecticut in connection with a stabbing that occurred in Ocean Park last Sunday.

According to a press release that went out late Tuesday afternoon, the juvenile has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with the intent to murder.

“After an extensive investigation, Oak Bluffs police and state police detectives applied for an arrest warrant last week with the juvenile court. The warrant was for a 16-year-old male from Connecticut whose name is being withheld because of his age,” the release states.

The individual turned himself into the Bourne state police barracks Tuesday morning, where he was processed, the release states.

The Cape and Islands district attorney’s office has requested two additional charges for mayhem and assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, according to the release. The release states that the individual is being arraigned in Falmouth court on all four charges.

A spokesman for the Cape and Islands DA’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.

In a followup email, Oak Bluffs police lieutenant Tim Williamson said the arraignment occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

“The investigation remains open and active and charges on other individuals are pending,” the release states.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 11 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, when Oak Bluffs police and EMS were dispatched in response to reports of a 36-year-old man who was suffering from stab wounds to the abdomen in front of the Oak Bluffs police station.

The victim was transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he was stabilized and later med-flighted to Boston for further treatment.

In the case update provided Tuesday, police stated that the victim is 35, with an Oak Bluffs address. The victim remains hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the press release.

Few details have emerged about the incident since it occurred more than a week prior. But in the follow-up email with the Gazette, Lieutenant Williamson said the stabbing occurred near the Ocean Park bandstand. He said the victim did not know the suspect.

A police report is not available because the case remains under investigation, he wrote.
