A rainy day on MV is better than a sunny day at home, well at least it can be. It’s New England and the rain definitely likes the coast. So, with that said, let’s talk about fun things to do on rainy days.

  • The Martha’s Vineyard Museum – The Martha’s Vineyard Museum inspires all people to discover, explore, and strengthen their connections to this Island and its diverse heritage – MVmuseum.org. The MVM is great for all ages!
  • The Carnegie – “The renovated and restored landmark includes reading rooms, a visitor center, gift shop and the permanent exhibition, Living Landmarks, which illustrates the historical development of Martha’s Vineyard through the lens of the landmarks in Vineyard Trust’s care”. – Vineyardtrust.org.
  • Flying Horses – “The Flying Houses Carousel is the nation’s oldest platform carousel. Since 1884, the Flying HorsesCarousel has delighted visitors in the town of Oak Bluffs” – Vineyardtrust.org. It continues to delight kids of all ages! Perhaps you will even get the brass ring!
  • Ryan Family Amusements – Kids love arcade, adults maybe not so much, but at the “Game Room”, you find all sorts of great games including my favorite – Skee Ball
  • Aquinnah Wampanoag Indian Museum – “Walk through history – from creation to contemporary – as it is told from the perspective of the Wampanoag people. Explore the technology and growth of the Wampanoag Nation” – Aquinnah.org. After, stop at the Cliffs and grab a bite to eat at The Aquinnah Shop (the view is unforgettable no matter the weather).
  • The Barn Bowl & Bistro – Sometimes a good afternoon of bowling is just what the doctor ordered. Added bonus, you can dine at The Barn as well.
  • Go to the movies – The Island has several movie theaters – Edgartown Cinemas, Martha’s Vineyard Film Center, the Capawock and the Strand (both currently closed). You can catch major releases, documentaries and sometimes even Jaws is playing.
  • Explore the local libraries – Each town has it’s own library, and they are great resources for kids activities. From crafts to special programs, you may find yourself here often, even on days that aren’t rainy.

  • Restaurant hop – This is one of my favorite things to do. I like to have an appetizer somewhere, entree elsewhere and dessert or drink someplace different. Some of our favorite rainy day spots include The Newes, The Atlantic, the Lookout Tavern, 19 Raw, MV Chowder Co., and The Seafood Shanty
  • Shopping – Grab an umbrella and go for it! The are so many great stores on Martha’s Vineyard. Every time you make a purchase from a small business, that owner does a little happy dance. Shopping local makes a huge difference for business owners here. Don’t forget to check out the art galleries!
  • Visit the lighthouses – hop in the car and tour the Island’s 5 lighthouses. The five lighthouses on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard represent the most diverse group in a small, contained area in the country, according to lighthouse buffs. All of the lighthouses look out over Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound, and over the entrance to Edgartown Harbor and Cape Poge – MVY.com. Curious as to which your favorite is after you explore and if you make it to the Cape Poge one – that’s trickier to get to.
  • Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks – Established in 1992, The Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks is a state of the art glass facility. When there, you can shop for incredible glass works of art and catch a demonstration. Watching glass transform into a beautiful piece of art is really something to see.
  • Treat yourself to a spa treatment or an at home message
  • Learn about Martha’s Vineyard with Built Story – Island author and historian, Thomas Dresser, has partnered with Built Story which is an ap that you download that provides tours of Martha’s Vineyard. You can take these at your own pace, stop and start again and more. They are very informative and you can walk, bike or drive for these. We did the African American History Tour Of Oak Bluffs last Spring and really enjoyed it.
  • Read a good book, perhaps one from a local author – there are a number of great authors who have been influenced by the Island or are from the Island. Head to Bunch of Grapes or Edgartown Books and checkout the local authors sections. Some well known names include Ellen Hildabrand, Skip Finley, Elizabeth Bell, Crispin Haskins, Tony Horowitz, and Philip Craig are just a few.
  • Take a tour to the areas where Jaws was filmed. From Jaws Bridge to the Chappy Ferry to the Gay Head light house, there are so many places from this iconic film that are sill around.

These are just a couple of things to do on rainy days, but sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. Of course we wish you amazing weather when you’re on the Island, however, rain happens. after all it’s New England. We hope this blog helps you discover even more ways to enjoy Martha’s Vineyard.
