They’ve waited 350 years. They may have to wait one more.
With Covid-19 cases still high, Edgartown will postpone their 350th anniversary picnic after a recommendation from the town board of health Wednesday.
Speaking to the Gazette by phone, Edgartown town administrator said he would discuss the event at Monday’s board of selectmen’s meeting, with the intention of postponing.
The decision comes after the town’s board of health voted unanimously to recommend the postponement at a meeting Wednesday night. Health agent Matt Poole said representatives from the town’s board of trade attended the meeting and agreed with the decision.
“It was a pretty strong recommendation,” Mr. Hagerty said. “It’s not happening.”
Originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13 from one to five p.m. at the Edgartown school, the town’s 350th anniversary picnic has been months in the planning, with live music, food, a photo booth and a beer garden.
Although Mr. Hagerty said the town would consider holding the picnic in October, he felt it was more likely the event would be rescheduled for 2022.
“We need a couple weeks to coordinate some of the activities,” Mr. Hagerty said. “More realistically, we’re probably looking at the spring.”
The postponement follows a similar decision by Tisbury earlier this summer. Both towns turned 350 years old on July 8, 2021.
