Meals together on Martha’s Vineyard often hold a special place in our lives. One of the most memorable dinners you can have is a Vineyard Clambake. Whether it’s catered, at a restaurant, a take-away meal, or one you cook on your own, there is nothing quite like it. You might even be surprised to discover exactly what’s in a Vineyard Clambake. It’s a delicious addition to our Vineyard Bucket List video series Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List: Vineyard Clambake

Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List: Vineyard Clambake – Catering A Clambake

There are a number of catering companies that offer a catered Vineyard Clambake. We hosted one this past Summer and worked with Bill Smith’s Famous Clambake. Bill Smith’s has been serving up these festive feasts for over 60 years.

Dan from Bill Smith’s Famous Clambakes

We absolutely loved working with Bill Smith’s. We had a small group, only about 15 people. Dan, the owner, and a team member met us at the beach just past Bend in the Road in Edgartown. They arrived early to set up the Vineyard Clambake and everything was there waiting for us to enjoy.

They had corn, chorizo. clams, potatoes, lobster and more. The lobsters were steamed right there on the beach for us. You can’t get much fresher! The “buffet” table was set up and everything we could possibly need was waiting for us. All we had to do was walk over from our beach chairs.

As we prepared our plates, we were all laughing and enjoying the experience and being at the beach together. We then sat as a group, laughing eating our Vineyard Clambake. Everything was delicious and there was so much food! Hard to believe that so many of our team members had never done a clambake on the beach before! A first for many and it was one of our favorite dinners together to date

All we had to do was bring our own chairs and beverages, Bill Smith’s took care of everything else. They can even do dessert if you want, and you can and if you have someone who doesn’t like lobster, they can bring something else like a roast chicken. We added a little more fun by also having a little acoustic live music there too.

Almost as easy as a catered Vineyard Clambake, you can get clam bakes and/or lobster dinners from a number of the fish markets including Menemsha Fish Market, Larsen’s, The Fish House, and Net Result. I often go to the Menemsha Fish Market for their Sunset Dinners.

The Menemsha Fish Market’s Sunset Dinner is so much more than lobster. In addition, you get your choice of clam chowder or lobster bisque, and a stuffed quahog or steamers. You can call the order in early and have it ready at your desired time.

Usually, I have already staked out my spot on the beach in Menemsha because if I am up there, I am definitely staying for the classic Menemsha sunset. Enjoying the sunset and the Sunset Dinner are definitely one of our go-to dinner experiences when we have family in town because this is such a Vineyard thing, and our visitors always have fun. Added bonus – clean-up is pretty easy with this clambake as well.

PRO TIP – Bring beach chairs, wipes, plenty of bevies, apps, and if you have one, a fold-up beach table. Also, be sure to add a couple local oysters to your meal, and no need to worry about dessert. You can head to the Galley for ice cream or stop at the Menemsha Texaco for a treat. Depending on the time of year, bring bathing suits, towels and/or clothing for layering. It can get chilly if it gets windy and once the sun goes down.

Martha’s Vineyard Bucket List: Vineyard Clambake – Ordering At A Restaurant

While the beach is a great choice for a Vineyard Clambake, some restaurants offer their own. We discovered one of the best ones is offered at Among the Flowers Cafe in Edgartown. During the Summer months, they serve up their signature Vineyard Feasts.

Vineyard Feasts are these incredible feasts that come in a big blue pot. Each feast has corn-on-the-cob, potatoes, linguica, fresh seafood and housemade seasoning all in one pot! The pot is brought to your table (if you dine in), and poured into a big pan for you to enjoy! These are definitely meant to be shared!
