Since 2012, one of our favorite fall rituals on Martha’s Vineyard has been the annual Scarecrow Festival, organized by the Martha’s Vineyard Charter School,
Based on literary characters, from a book or a script, this year’s scarecrows are quite creative and impressive. There are 70 scarecrows to discover on the Island, including two at Point B — one at the rental office and one at the sales office.
Scarecrows Help Get Martha’s Vineyard in the Halloween Spirit – Discovering the Scarecrows
When I drove past our sales office, I was so excited! We got the best BIG BIRD scarecrow. It’s incredible! Everything about it makes you smile and feel happy. I then walked over to our rental office and was met by Rocket! If you’ve watched Guardians of the Galaxy, then you definitely know who Rocket is. Shhhh don’t tell him that he looks like a raccoon! Such a fun, creative scarecrow.
Our scarecrow creators are Janie and Sam Flanders. This dynamic duo has done 11 of the 70 scarecrows around the Island this year. They had a great time, and enjoyed the creative efforts each one required. A big thank you to you both from the Point B team — we love our scarecrows!
With the nor’easter that came through earlier this week, some of the scarecrows had to be refreshed, but everyone is back just in time for Halloween. We visited the three down-Island towns to search for some of our favorites.
We were sad to miss the up-Island fun, but perhaps we can make it there before the scarecrows leave until next Halloween.
Scarecrows Help Get Martha’s Vineyard in the Halloween Spirit – Creative Fun for Good
The scarecrows are one of the best fundraises on the Island! Each one is helping to raise money for a number of great things for the kids at the MVPCS. The builder receives part of the money to be used for the funds that will be used on their personal travel on the school trip to Italy or Puerto Rico and prom (first one ever), and the other half goes to the PTO for project based learning.
When you see one of the scarecrows, take a minute to notice the details, and know that it was made with a lot of love for a great cause. If you would like one of the scarecrows for your business next year, give the MVPCS a call in early October. You never know what will show up at your door.
