The Newes is one of those places that feels so comfortable to visit, like putting on your favorite cozy sweater. I especially enjoy it this time of year. The warmth of the fire, the menu loaded with comfort food and the overall old school colonial pub feel makes it easy to settle in and let time slip away.
If you are a Newes fan like I am, now is the time to go. As of December 31st, the Newes will be closed for renovations. Of course I hope that Blue Flag, the new owners, will keep some of the features that make the Newes so charming like the brick and wine and spirits etched glass piece, but we will have to see.
In the meantime, let’s celebrate all things The Newes with good food, friends and cocktails!
Newes Season Finale – Cocktails
You may have noticed that the cocktail menu has been elevated, and that’s because Brett Nevin of MV Speakeasy who was making cocktails at the Pelican Club over the Summer has taken over the cocktail menu.
Brett plans to have an updated menu weekly for cocktails. Making memorable drinks is his passion. Each time I see him, he whips up something magically delicious – with fresh ingredients and a little something extra.
When I went a couple of Fridays ago, my favorite cocktail of the night was the Capawock – rosemary infused bourbon, rye blend, honey, orange bitters, and cinnamon. This was a full on experience – so much that I took a video of this drink before enjoying it.
It was the perfect Fall drink to have before dinner. So much flavor and a joy to sip on while catching up with friends by the fire.
Newes Season Finale – Dining
With this being the last season of The Newes, chef Ja’Derrick Reed is bringing back some Newes classics like the French Dip. Keep an eye out for old favorites. While there, if you like tater tots, then you have to get the Poutine Potato Tots! This app was ah-mazing! Imagine, tater tots smothered with housemade gravy, bacon and cheese curds, topped with a sunny-side egg. Yes it’s as decadent as it sounds.
The Reuben is always a good choice and the Fish & Chips are a crowd pleaser. Good fries, including truffle fries are always a must. Luckily they have salads so you can balance out some of the rich food.
So, now you know – you have a couple weeks to enjoy the Newes. If you can, go once and enjoy it for how it is. This restaurants has had some ups and downs, and right now it is so good. I can’t wait to go back!
The Newes is open Wednesday through Sunday, noon – 8:00 p.m. If you prefer, you can get takeaway as an option.
