It looks like a party straight out of the roaring twenties will be coming to the Boston area in 2024.

A new musical, “Gatsby,” will be making a world premiere at Harvard Square’s American Repertory Theater. Based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the stage adaptation will be directed by Tony award winner Rachel Chavkin, with music by Florence Welch, the Grammy award nominated star of Florence and the Machine, and Thomas Bartlett. A.R.T.’s artistic director Diane Paulus told Boston.com that she is excited for the highly anticipated show to open next year.

“The vision of this brilliant creative team for ‘The Great Gatsby’ makes Fitzgerald’s iconic novel feel more relevant and powerful than ever,” Paulus wrote in a statement. “It has been thrilling to be a part of the development of this new musical with such an incredible team. I cannot wait for A.R.T.’s audiences to experience what I know will be a major theatrical event.”

“The Great Gatsby” tells the story of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, set in Long Island, New York, during the Jazz Age. In the hopes of being reunited with his former love, Daisy Buchanan, he throws fabulous parties at his mansion. The tale was also adapted by director Baz Luhrmann into a movie in 2013.

Florence and the Machine is an indie rock band that formed in England in 2007. Known for Welch’s ethereal and powerful vocals, their music has been described as “dark, robust, and romantic.” Hit songs include “Day Days Are Over” and “Shake It Out,” while the band released an album “Dance Fever” in 2022.
