Ten young Island students won awards for their accomplishments at Falmouth Academy’s annual science and engineering fair.
At the high school level, freshman Cian Davis of Chilmark was awarded fourth place for a project about the effect of surfboard design on fluid dynamics. Sophomore Maria Soares of Vineyard Haven was awarded a fourth place and the Falmouth Water Stewards award for her project, The Potential Effect of Global Warming on Dugesia Tigrina Regeneration.
Upper-school honorable mentions were awarded to freshman Amelia Russell Schaeffer of Edgartown, Emma Bena of Chilmark and Maverick Pil of Vineyard Haven.
At the middle school level, eighth grader Penelope Thornton, who won second place for studying the effects of ocean acidification and temperatures on shells. Fourth place awards went to eighth graders Kate Conover for a project titled Lichtenberg Figures and to Harley Snowden for studying escherichia coli outspread and cleanse with different cleaning products.”
Middle-school honorable mentions were awarded to seventh grader Emme Carroll and eighth grader Gabriel Murray.
Hutker Architects sponsored special awards for graphic presentation. Freshman Amelia Russell Schaeffer of Edgartown received an upper-school awards for Conductivity of Electro-Netting under Different Conditions and eighth grader Story Taylor of West Tisbury received a middle-school award for exploring the effect of road salt on radishes.
