The Vineyard boys basketball team ended its postseason run losing to the Old Rochester Bulldogs 59-50 Wednesday evening in Mattapoisett.
Despite a heroic 22 point, three rebound and one steal performance from Nate Story and a 10 point, 11 rebound, double double from Matheus Rodrigues, the Vineyarders turnovers proved too costly as their opponents outran them in transition and were dialed in from well beyond the three point line.
Overall, the third-seeded Bulldogs proved to be a tough matchup. Both their front and back courts either equaled or outsized the Vineyard’s, with their guards also just as quick and pesky on defense.
About halfway through the second quarter, the Vineyarders found themselves in a 10 point hole and the game was teetering on Old Rochester pulling away until Nate Story took over and lit up the scoreboard from downtown. On the back of the junior guard’s four three pointers in the second quarter and a monster dunk from Matheus Rodrigues, the Vineyard briefly held a three point lead before the half.
However, the second half was a bit of a repeat of the first with turnovers and a stagnant offense leaving the Vineyard down double digits once again.
The team cut the Bulldog’s 11 point cushion to three with 5:34 left in the fourth on a Tobey Roberts three but that was as close as it got. The Vineyard ends its season with a final record of 18-4.
