Since Debbie and Alex Cohen began working on the restaurant that occupies the corner across the street from Offshore Ale, we have been excitedly waiting for its opening day. We’ve watched the changes made — a new entrance location, new windows, a new color palette, and so much more.
When you walk through the doors at The Pawnee House (the name of a grand hotel in Oak Bluffs), it’s like walking into a fresh, modern farmhouse kitchen. It’s amazing to see what was once such a dark space so light and bright. The new bar has a subway tile backdrop and beckons you to sit and enjoy a cocktail. The whole space feels easy and welcoming. And it is a welcome dining addition to our We Love MV series — WE LOVE MV: The Pawnee House Restaurant Debut In Oak Bluffs.

Debbie and Alex both have spent decades working in the food industry. They have been thinking about opening a small restaurant, and knew of one with a perfect location, Kennebec Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Lucky for them, the building has been in Alex’s family since 1956. With Debbie as the chef and Alex managing the front of the house, they are creating their dream together.

At The Pawnee House, you will find a menu that features a good selection of contemporary comfort food with vegan and non-vegan options. Debbie creates colorful dishes, rich texture and flavor. We were treated to a sampling of the dishes that will be found on The Pawnee House menu including Grilled Polenta with MV Mycological Mushrooms, Salmon Wellington, Beet & Goat Cheese Stacks and the pièce de résistance, Curried Sweet Potato Flatbread.
When I heard flatbread from our waitress Sonja, I was not too excited, but I have to admit that The Pawnee House flatbread is a game-changer. The crust was so light and flakey, somewhat pie-like. The sweet potatoes, the Brussels sprouts, the sriracha honey, all came together in a magical way. I cannot wait to have this again!
The Pawnee House will be open through until January. It will be a great addition to our offseason dining scene. I am looking forward to Covid ending so I can really enjoy sitting at their bar.
