“We’re more than just sports and Harvard.”

Boston’s Everyone250 initiative launched on Wednesday. Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff

Boston just launched a campaign that will promote equitable celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary and redefine what it means to belong in Boston.

  • One of the best Black-owned bookstores in the US is in Boston, according to Afar

Everyone250 aims to “redefine anniversary celebrations through a lens of justice, anti-racism, and belonging,” according to the campaign, led by A Beautiful Resistance, Embrace Boston, MassArt, Mass Humanities, and Mathmatik Athletics.

“We want to talk about the incredibly complex and beautiful, interesting place that Boston is,” Emily Foster Day, executive director of the MassArt Foundation and one of the five co-chairs of Everyone250, told The Boston Globe at Wednesday’s kick-off event in an office building overlooking Post Office Square. “The goal of E250 is to celebrate all the ways that Boston is a rich, historical, wonderful place. We’re more than just sports and Harvard.”

Everyone250 is working with more than 100 partners within Boston’s arts and culture sector to plan immersive events, cultural activations, and opportunities for community-driven storytelling.

A 1965 Freedom Rally Commemoration on Boston Common will take place on April 26, described as “a historic gathering to honor Boston’s legacy of civil rights activism and its impact on today’s movement.” Also planned: a E250 Arts & Culture Summit that will take place in November.

“This campaign isn’t just about looking back – it’s about forging a future where every story matters,” said Dart Adams, co-chair of Everyone250 and co-founder of Mathmatik Athletics, in a statement. “We’re building a platform where inclusivity is celebrated and everyone’s contributions to America’s legacy are acknowledged, marking a significant step in reimagining what it means to belong in Boston.”
