The City of Boston announced Wednesday the dates and the five neighborhoods — with one new edition — that will be a part of its annual Open Streets program.
The Open Streets program, started in the summer of 2022, closes off neighborhood streets to car traffic to make space for games, activities, bicycling, and small business vendors. Here is the list of this year’s participating neighborhoods:
Roxbury: Saturday, July 12, Blue Hill Avenue from Warren Street to Quincy Street
Hyde Park: Sunday, Aug. 10, Hyde Park Avenue and River Street to Fairmount Street and Davison Street
Dorchester: Sunday, Sept. 14, Dorchester Avenue from Ashmont Street to Adams Street
Mattapan: Saturday, Oct. 18, Blue Hill Avenue from River Street to Babson Street
Jamaica Plain: Sunday, Nov. 2, Centre Street from Lamartine Street to South Street
During a talkshow appearance Wednesday, Mayor Michelle Wu said she loves the programs and always hears positive feedback from participants.
“It’s really, in some ways, reminding us about how every space can be a public space,” Wu said on “Java with Jimmy.”
Mattapan is a part of the Open Streets initiative for the first time this year, Wu said.
Open Streets is an offshoot of Open Newbury Street, which debuted as a pilot program in 2016 and, in 2023, closed the famous shopping street to cars for a record 16 consecutive Sundays.
In “Java with Jimmy,” Wu thanked Shana Bryant and her firm, Shana Bryant Consulting, for organizing the Open Streets event for the last several years.
“They’ve really been our key partner in making sure that people know about it and that each Open Streets is also tailored to that particular community and the cultures and the organizations and residents that are in the area,” Wu said.
