WELLFLEET — High winds are believed to be the cause of two brush fires that broke out in Wellfleet Tuesday night.
At approximately 6:27 p.m., the Wellfleet Fire Department was called to respond to a brush fire at 360 Gross Hill Road, where an Eversource electrical substation is located, the department said in a statement. The fire caused a power loss for about 500 customers.
Fire Chief Richard Pauley arrived to find a 10-by-20 foot area burning. High winds fanned the flames, according to the statement.
A second brush fire was reported shortly afterward at the corner of Long Pond Road and Queens Way. Wellfleet fire Capt. Joseph Cappello arrived on scene and reported a fire covering an area of about 50-by-100 feet that was traveling toward an unoccupied residence nearby.
Firefighters brought a hose to the rear of the residence to keep the fire from coming within 15 feet from the property, according to the statement.
Two Eversource trucks responded and shut off power in both locations.
The Gross Hill Road fire was extinguished at around 7:13 p.m., and the Long Pond Road fire was extinguished at approximately 7:33 p.m., the statement said. Both fires required significant overhaul to check for hot spots.
The Eastham and Truro fire departments provided mutual aid, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Bureau of Forestry and Control also assisted.
