PROVINCETOWN — The retired firefighter killed Friday morning after he was pinned under a tractor mower was Leo “Skip” Childs III of Truro, his wife, Marjorie, confirmed Sunday.

Childs, 69, was mowing the lawn at St. Peter’s Cemetery off Winslow Street at around 9:30 a.m. when the tractor tipped over, Fire Chief Michael Trovato said. Fire Department crews removed the mower.

“They did the best they could to save his life, but he didn’t make it,” Trovato said.

Childs was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was a retired firefighter-paramedic from the Provincetown and Truro departments.

Material from the Cape Cod Times was used in this story.
