Ah Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard. It feels as though this is when the door to summer really closes. Each weekend leading up, islanders and visitors alike head to the beach on warm sunny days, and soak up as much of the island sun as possible. After this weekend, there is a shift, a quieting, a slowing down. But for now, let’s take a We Love MV preview —WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard – The Carnegie
Have you been to The Carnegie in Edgartown? It’s where the Edgartown Library once was. Now owned by The Vineyard Trust, you will discover amazing island artifacts and so much more, including art exhibits. It really is a special place to visit.
The Carnegie is featuring Island artist Libby Ellis, Joyful Participation in a World Of Sorrows. Her larger than life black and white photos are whimsical yet thought provoking. In addition to its memorable historical and current collections, be sure to check out the tours they offer.
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard – The Fish House Lobster Special
Who doesn’t love a good classic New England Lobster bake? The Fish House, located at the airport, has a Lobster Bake Weekend Special offered Thursday through Saturday. The special includes a steamed 1 1/4 lb local Menemsha Lobster with mussels, clams, corn, red potatoes, andouille sausage, lemon and butter.
Sound good? The price is really good too. It’s only $29.99! Pick-up is 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and no substitutions. This requires a little planning since you have to pre-order at least 1 hour prior to anticipated pick-up time, call the lobster order line (508) 693-0055
Take your lobster bake to the beach, to an open field, your backyard — really anywhere, and turn your night into something a little more special without lifting a finger in the kitchen!
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard – MV Masquerade
This is the last MV Masquerade, when Circuit Avenue and Kennebec Avenue are closed for outdoor dining and shopping on Sundays in Oak Bluffs. Restaurants expand their outdoor dining to accommodate more diners and the street takes on a festive vibe.
Look for pop-up shops as well during this Sunday’s event like Tara Reynolds and Bad Apple. Also, I bet there will be plenty of sales happening too. Some stores are closing for the season, like Island Outfitters, and Slip 77 always have a Columbus Day sale.
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard Off-Season Beaches
We truly love this time of year at the beach. You can go to Lucy Vincent, to Squibby, to Lambert’s Cove and more! Be prepared for varying temps. It’s all about layering, and be sure pack food and bevies. You might be surprised at how alluring the Fall sun and the beach can be!
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard – The 20th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival
This year, The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival is hosting it’s 20th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival in its summer format – at the Drive-In! All summer and into the fall, TMVFF has been hosting a Drive-In Movie series, and it was one of the best additions to the season.

WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard -Shopping Local
This weekend is well known for special sales. Be sure to check out your favorites. Many of sales can be found on stores’ instagram accounts. You can also call as well. For example, CB Stark is hosting its annual 20% sale this weekend (good online too with code COZY), Pandora’s Box and Suka both have terrific end of Summer 50% off sales. Coastal Supply Co. will have it’s Tent Sale too, and these are just a couple. Happy Shopping!
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard -Local Farms & Markets
The Island is bursting with color and the local farms are in full fall glory. From a visit to Morning Glory Farm for the perfect pumpkin and fall pic for the “gram,” to The Grey Barn for delicious, fresh-baked bread, to a stop at the new farm stand at North Tabor Farm, this is a great weekend to explore the Island’s bounty.
Also, don’t forget about the West Tisbury Farmer’s Market on Saturday at The Ag Hall. If you haven’t been, be sure to check out the new additions, Stoneyhill Pizza, Martha’s Rose Scallops, Salt Rock Chocolates, Cottage City Oysters and more!
WE LOVE MV: Columbus Day Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard – Dining Out
This is the last weekend for a number of Island restaurants including Nomans, the Coop (maybe – it depends on the weather, they may stay open longer). Many restaurants closed early this season, but some are staying open longer too.
Visit an old favorite or check out someplace new like Seaweeds or The Pawnee House both on Kennebec Avenue in Oak Bluffs. This weekend, the Chilmark Tavern is reopening after a brief break which is great news for up-island.
A fun two-for would be to play mini-golf at The Cove and grab tacos from the newest food truck on MV, El Gato Grande. The Cottage City Fried Oyster Tacos are delicious and the ice cream from The Cove is so yummy!
These are just a few experiences to add to your Fall holiday weekend on the Vineyard. There are galleries to visit, trails to walk, and don’t forget to check out Bass in the Grass MV! Whatever you do, we hope that you have a wonderful time. It’s a Fall of new experiences, finding new favorites — enjoying the Vineyard unscripted. Reimagined.
